These are a Few Of My Favorite Things
It’s been a busy week for me; work has started to actually gain some speed now that I’m moving out of all the intro to this and welcome to that stuff. Getting up to speed can be a long process, but I’m glad it’s starting to move that way. Add into that a bit of trouble with the family dog (she’s fine, thankfully) and my wife and I starting to Calorie Count pretty much in earnest, this has been a hard week to find something to post about. I was nicely ahead by a few weeks but that seems to have dried up so…
Instead, you get a post about a few of my favorite things!
Some of my favorite people to follow on twitter:
Tech:
JavaScript+Coffee - @JavaScriptoCoff1: This talented up and comer is just getting started on her path to code, but she has a tenacity for it that is well appreciated to watch! If you ever need to remember what it’s like to be back at the beginning; follow #CodeNewbies and help them out.
Andrey ‘CatLogic’ - @cat__logic: This guy is a hell of a designer - everyone does the Calculator project at some point in their lives, but this guys CSS styling was amazing!
Will "techpod.content.town" Smith - @willsmith: You’ll see this guy again in my Podcast section, but he has his fingers in a lot of different pies and loves to be in and about different types of tech.
Circuit Swan - @CircuitSwan: A very old and long time friend who knows her way around the world of tech like few others. She has done many amazing projects in her professional career and helps to promote some amazing causes like the Diana Initiative; to get more women in tech.
Makers:
Geek Mom Projects - @GeekMomProjects: This lady has some serious skills and chops and man does she make some really cool things using all sorts of tech and code.
Simone Giertz - @SimoneGiertz: Crazy broken don’t work quite right robots that are a blast to watch. Gotta love it!
Adam Savage - @donttrythis: The former Mythbuster continues strong in the world with many amazing projects. I love to listen to his stories about Making and in general being a crafty type.
Twitch / youtube
OldManSethus: Look. This is an adult channel. It gets rowdy, it doesn’t pull punches. It is also the most inclusive space I have -ever- encountered on the internet; the Old Man wants everyone to love and be loved, to do as they find best for them, and to not rain on others parade. He supports that constantly; and while definitely a rated R channel, it is none the less very welcoming.
Day9TV: I used to watch Day9’s “How to Be a Better Starcraft Player” series all the time; even though I had other things going on that made it difficult for me to take the lessons to heart, it was still amazing. Add to his great talent in analyzing video games a math degree that shows up quite often he is a great fun watch.
KatherineOfSky: This lady does some amazing videos on YouTube with procedural games: the kind where you are building some form of factory or process and growing it bigger and larger with each step. She plays a lot of them and has a very wonderful voice to sooth someone to sleep with as well!
SkillUp: I am not certain when I found this channel on YouTube, but ever since I have been amazed by the quality of his reviews. I have found that I seem to enjoy the same games as him; so his reviews are generally always on point for me.
Podcasts
Tested: This is just Adam Savage and a few friends talking geekdom every week; but I love to get my dose of geekdom.
Brad & Will made a TechPod: This podcast does a weird deep dive into something tech every week and there are some pretty incredible bits of knowledge that come out of it. This is the podcast I mentioned with WillSmith up above. Plus their Patreon Discord is great fun and has a ton of interesting tech conversations.
99% Invisible: If you haven’t listened to the dulcet tones of Roman Mars explaining to you the hidden design behind … anything … you are missing out.
Those are just a few of the media content I devour. I don’t want to spend all my currency here in one post, but in general other things - Games, books, ect - I tend to bounce around in quite often and always am finding myself in a different place in. That leaves those for another time though.
